2D Animation

2D Animation

2D Animation is the process of creating movements in a two-dimensional environment. Compared to 3D animation, 2D animation is easier. We all know what we call a video is basically single frames (pictures) that are displayed quickly within a short amount of time. The current standard is 24 frames per second (23.97 quantitatively). A high frame rate is achievable, but 24 fps is the standard for a cinematic viewing experience. Persistence of the human eye (eyes retain images for 1/16 of a second) is behind the sense of motion we feel. 2D animation doesn’t go above 30 fps as the maximum range. 2D artists create individual frames and join them together as a sequence to convey a message or tell a story.

2D animation trends in 21st Century

2D is an incredible medium that’s making a massive comeback. It can be seen on TV shows, video games, feature films, advertisements, mobile apps, and websites. Tom and Jerry can be considered as one of the most viewed 2D animated series. Social media platforms like Snapchat have 2D animated series with 1-3 minute episodes. Some 2D games are very popular with their in-game elements and game logic. Angry birds, Mini Militia, Altos Adventure, Super Mario, Jetpack Joyride and Vector are some of the most downloaded 2D games on a mobile platform.

How 2D animations are made

2D animators create stories and animations by drawing characters, objects and backgrounds and then giving them a motion in a two-dimensional environment. 2D animators first sketch the designs, developing storyboards, animate scenes, creates VFX, and at last give transition to the backgrounds. Commercial animation projects have three different phases: Pre Production, production, and post-production. Preproduction is all about creating the story and developing characters. Then define background layout, write the script, record dialogue and animating the character. In the production, stage animators give life to characters by giving them motion, colour them and set them up in the appropriate backgrounds. In Post-production, audio including dialogue is added and synced before exporting them to the required format.
